“It’s not that I don’t like you, I’m just at a par-tayy”

March 16th, 2010 Posted by Jenn McD. Video Review

This past Thursday, the world watched as the E! channel premiered Lady Gaga’s new video for her single “Telephone.” In my personal opinion, it was not what I expected at all (from the standpoint that it was weirder than normal for Lady Gaga). The nine and a half minute video featured Lady Gaga and Beyonce (referred to as Gaga and Honey B in the video) as two women on a mission to wreak havoc!

The video starts off with Lady Gaga handcuffed in a black and white striped suit being led in by two very butch-like guards. As they throw her into her cell, they strip her completely naked in hopes of determining her true sex. In the next scene, Gaga enters the prison yard sporting a pair of sunglasses with lit cigarettes, getting frisky with some of the other inmates. Finally about two and a half minutes into the video music begins playing, and Lady Gaga and other inmates dance in barely-there lingerie. Honey B then makes her entrance in the video, as she bails Gaga out of jail. They drive away in the ever colorful “pussy wagon”, referencing the very popular Kill Bill movies.

They enter a diner where Tyrese Gibson makes a special appearance as the apparent cheating boyfriend. Next, Gaga is in the kitchen whipping up her famous poison and preparing the orders of the patrons. Gaga serves Tyrese his order who proceeds to choke to death on his poisoned food. The video shows the other patrons viciously choking on their food until all are dead. Gaga and Honey B do a very patriotic dance number in the midst of these dead bodies. They flee the scene with Gaga promising Honey B that they’ll never come back…but the video ends with a “to be continued”.

The video does not follow the lyrics, which makes it hard to understand. On top of that, the video is a glorified commercial. Product placements such as Wonder Bread, Virgin Mobile, Polaroid, and KRAFT Miracle Whip give the viewer the idea that they’re watching an extended Super Bowl commercial. I love Lady Gaga to pieces and love her recent collaborations with Beyonce even more, but this was way weirder than usual.
