Adieu 2009

by J Frazzetta December 28th, 2009 | Music Opinions
This decade has seen its share of ups and downs in the music world: record sales.  Many would argue that the music was on the cutting edge, and I may not agree with you there.  To be honest, there was so much going on with MP3 technology that it was often hard to hear what was original and what was just a cut out of the last band.  MP3’s may have boosted sales of electronics, but it didn’t do much for the production of better music. Decade Faves, Part 2

by J Frazzetta December 24th, 2009 | Album Review
Like Part One, only with different albums this time.

The Black Keys, Thickfreakness – Basic, straightforward, and honest.  Pat’s monster drumming and Dan’s guitar work and vocals can give you chills.

Death Cab for Cutie, Narrow Stairs – The first single, “I Will Possess Your Heart” has a great bass riff and makes “Every Breathe You Take” cry a little.  Dense sounds and intimate lyrics make this a dark treat.

Dr. Dog, We All Belong – These Pennsylvanian boys brought the funk and blues to as low-fi as they could.  Nothing complicated here and “Alaska” is a gem if you miss anybody.

Act Locally

by Michele December 21st, 2009 | Independent Artists, Video
What started out as a way for an old band to get back together, turned into a real reality check for STS. People are "Under Pressure" everywhere and need to be aware and hopefully act locally.

This video was created after the band played a memorial gig for a friend who passed away, and it got them thinking. Why not create a video to go along with the theme of this great tune, "Under Pressure", originally performed by Queen and David Bowie?

Credit goes to guitarist John Whitcore who suggested submitting the video to Avid Technology's video

Decade Faves, Part 1

by J Frazzetta December 14th, 2009 | Album Review, Music Opinions
My decade favorites have been broken into two parts, each part in alphabetical order.  Without further ado:

Beck, Sea Change – A dark time for Beck produced an incredible moment for music.  His back to roots approach is fantastic; without any flair, he conveys his deepest emotion.

Coldplay, A Rush of Blood to the Head – ‘Yellow’ was a huge success, but this whole album was what made Coldplay gigantic.  Straightforward lyrics and bands cohesion made this possible.

The Flaming Lips, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots – Masters of the weird, The Lips made a little story about a Japanese girl fighting off

Album Review: BlakRoc, BlakRoc, 11/27/09

by J Frazzetta December 7th, 2009 | Album Review
What do you get when you mix a blues, garage band with 11 rappers?  Rap and rock, not that cheesy rap/metal stuff, but real beats with some talented lyrics on top.  The Black Keys paired up with some choice MCs to lay down this album, and if you are a fan of great music, you’ll enjoy this.

Just who did the Ohio-duo join forces with?  Glad you asked: Mos Def, Ludacris, RZA, Pharoahe Monch, Nicole Wray, Raekwon, Jim Jones, Q-Tip, Billy Danze, NOE and ODB.  The latter was a recording with Ludacris rapping along.  The Keys provide all the backing beats
