Album Review: Broken Bells, S/T, 3/9/10

March 30th, 2010 by J Frazzetta | Album Review
Brian Burton is a mighty mouse.  Between reinventing sampling, producing with Beck, Gorillaz, or MF Doom he has his hands full.  Who am I talking about?  Well, you probably know him as Danger Mouse and one half of his current project Broken Bells. The other half is James Mercer, lead of The Shins. Together they have collaborated to create an unlikely pop masterpiece.

If no one told me that Danger Mouse had done the production to this album, I would have been able to tell within two tracks.  He has a trademark sound of making everything sound like Magical Mystery

It's the only music I've been listening to, (I suppose I should be glad that I'm not a lead!) but it's good music. What's the musical? Footloose!

Most people today are familiar with only a few songs

March 23rd, 2010 by J Frazzetta | Concert Review
When it comes to live music, it is pretty hard to keep me away.  Especially if it is at a bar, pretty cheap and you know the lead singer.  Mixing in originals with some interesting covers, The Sea Captains put on a solid performance.

There is a lack of good guitar pop and smart lyrics in the world, which is where the Captains seem to fit.  They’ve been playing shows between Manchester and Portland, Maine, since 2005 and have built a steady following.  The lyrical wit of Cake, early Weezer and a penchant to get up a groove is what

Classic Review: The Beach Boys, Pet Sounds, 1966

March 19th, 2010 by J Frazzetta | Album Review
I noted several of the albums I reviewed earlier this year had much in common: multiple harmonies and layers of meticulous production.  If you dig back in the history of popular music, you’ll come across one album that seems to have spurred this blossoming trend.  Just when everyone thought they had Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys pegged as a fun time surf band, Pet Sounds would be a change in artist direction that many fans wouldn’t appreciate at first but would become a watershed moment for popular music.

I’ll leave you to do some reading on your own, but
