New Release: Death Cab for Cutie, Codes and Keys

by J Frazzetta June 28th, 2011 | Album Review, Music Opinions
To be honest with you; I started listening to Death Cab around the time of “Soul Meets Body” and have been pulled in since then.  Many people will say that the band has ‘sold out’ or ‘they don’t sound like they used to’ and if you got that impression from reading Pitchfork then you are no better yourself.

Compared to their last album Narrow Stairs, Codes and Keys is lighthearted and easy to access.  Call it what you will, since Benjamin Gibbard married Zooey Deschanel his song writing has taken an upswing.  I mean have you seen her?  I would

Bad Meets Evil: Re-Emerging Through Hellfire

by Jason Lightner June 24th, 2011 | Album Review, Artist Review, Hip Hop
You may remember a little duo crafted from hip hop naturals Eminem and Royce da 5'9" called Bad Meets Evil. Then again, you may very well not. It's been 12 years since the duo worked together, their previous musical projects being the songs "Nuttin' to Do" and "Scary Movies" off of the single Nuttin' to Do.

Royce da 5'9" and Eminem's "Bad and Evil" friendship began in 1997 when they were introduced to each other at a show by Royce's then manager. A few years later, an altercation between Royce and longtime friends of Eminem, D12, would lead

Daddy’s Mix

by J Frazzetta June 21st, 2011 | Music Opinions
This past Sunday was a first for me: I celebrated Father’s Day.  Yes, avid reader, back in February this world was graced with a smaller and cuter version of me.  Her name is Violet and she finds spinning turntables to be fascinating.  Like any parent, I find myself often singing to her when she gets sleepy or if I have to calm her down a bit, and rather than sing some stupid nursery rhyme, I dive into my mental collection and sing her some songs I know.  I’m thankful she can’t tell me to stop yet, since I can’t

“Please Please Me” Does Just That

by Jason Lightner June 17th, 2011 | Album Review
A classic album from a classic band, Please Please Me was the first album by The Beatles. Recorded (mostly) in 1963 in a rush attempt to capitalize on the success of their singles "Love Me Do" and "Please Please Me," the album was a resounding success in the U.K., staying on the top album charts for thirty weeks before being replaced by The Beatles' subsequent album. Please Please Me has even earned the #39 spot on the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

The album was originally intended to capture the live sound of the

New Release: My Morning Jacket, Circuital

by J Frazzetta June 14th, 2011 | Album Review, New Music
I was worried about this album when I heard that the Kentucky boys were using some more psychedelic folk like their previous release 2008’s Evil Urges.  Nothing against that record but it lumbered on after about eight tracks and the experimental pieces in the beginning were kind of far out.  Holing up in a church gymnasium in Louisville to record their latest, you can tell they are doing some experimenting and holding onto the roots that made them famous.

Interspersed throughout this album are some spots where you can hear the band having a good time and stretching out a
