Air, Le Voyage Dans La Lune, 2012

by J Frazzetta May 30th, 2012 | Album Review, Music Opinions
Ah bonjour, Avid Reader, ca va?  That concludes most of the French I recall from years of practicing in high school and college, so I’ll leave it to Jean-Benoit Dunckel and Nicolas Godin to wield their sweet language better than I could.  You might recognize the image on the cover of this album from the famous 1902 black and white film A Trip to the Moon directed by Georges Melies; that’s because this album is an update of the music from that film with a little extra flair.

As of late I’ve been spacing out to most of the albums

Picture Show

Neon Trees is a relatively "young" Utah-based alternative rock (think along the lines of The Killers, who they opened for to gain nationwide recognition for the first time) band whose popularity is starting to spread across the nation.

The band was founded in 2005 and released its debut album Habits in 2010. Habits contains less than a half hour of material and thus is a borderline  EP. (Twenty-five minutes is the technical cut-off for an EP, in case you were curious.) However, it did contain the gem "Animal," which reached the #13 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and the top spot on

If you’ve seen the buzz for this band then you’ve heard them described as bluegrass, progressive bluegrass or something along those lines.  First, I am not going to claim I know anything about bluegrass beyond a banjo riff or mouth harp twang.  Second, I do work with a fellow that knows plenty about Americana, bluegrass and delta blues,  who informed me that this is not bluegrass at all.  Yes, they have some banjo, fiddle and mandolin, but that does not cut the mustard.  Let’s dive a little deeper, Avid Reader.

What sets this apart from some bluegrass samples my coworker

Todd Snider, Agnostic Hymns & Stoner Fables

by J Frazzetta May 23rd, 2012 | Album Review, Music Opinions
The author William S. Burroughs was, for lack of a better word, eccentric; I mean he wrote Naked Lunch for crying out loud.  Back in 1996 he collaborated with R.E.M. to cover their song "Star Me Kitten" for the X-Files soundtrack -- and it was just him reading the lyrics in monotone while the band played the song.  Kind of interesting but also strange, like most of the things he’s done.  The entire time I listened to this album last week, all I could think was that Burroughs was reading some weird poetry while a band was playing behind

Earthfest 2012, DCR Hatch Shell, 5/19/2012

by J Frazzetta May 22nd, 2012 | Concert Review, Music News
Another year, another free show down at the DCR Hatch Shell overlooking the serene Charles River on a sunny afternoon in Boston; what could be better?  This year’s lineup was a bit of a step up from last year, although I did get in a little late and I was pleased with the moments I caught.  With sets from Eve6, Switchfoot, Spin Doctors and Third Eye Blind it was sure to be a good time.

As I stated earlier, Avid Reader, I did get in late and happened to miss Eve6 and a good portion of Switchfoot.  However, we
