A Look at Linkin Park

by Jason Lightner August 31st, 2012 | Artist Review
evo·lu·tion (noun) from Merriam-Webster:

"a process of continuous change from a lower, simpler, or worse to a higher, more complex, or better state : growth"

When you consider the word evolution in music, it brings to mind musicians that have transcended genres they themselves created. Groups like The Beatles and artists like Trent Reznor are examples of artists who have developed and honed their work through years of dedication. The music created during their beginnings bears little resemblance to later works simply due to a slow progression culminating in a polished and deliberate creation.

Live Trane

by J Frazzetta August 29th, 2012 | Artist Review, Featured Artist, Music Opinions
When it comes to jazz or any genre of music, the gems that are the most rewarding are the live recordings and bootlegs.  There are some albums that I know better than the back of my own hand, Avid Reader, so when you listen to a live recording and hear the artist improvise it takes you off guard but makes you appreciate the musicianship.  This is a common trend in jazz, and you can hear it in any live recording if you stack it up against the original LP track.  I don’t have very many live albums that Coltrane

After the massive success of Carly Rae Jepsen's hit single "Call Me Maybe," I can't have been the only one left wondering, what does her other music sound like? It's not that I even like "Call Me Maybe"; I just had to know, does she even have other music to offer? Sure enough, Jepsen has a few other tracks out there for us to listen to, the most recent coming from her EP Curiosity, which was released in Canada on Valentine's Day this year.

Curiosity was originally going to be a full-length album, but was transformed into an EP shortly before

by J Frazzetta August 27th, 2012 | Album Review, Music Opinions, New Music
It took me a while to appreciate the nuances of Metric.  Since 2009’s release of Fantasies I heard "Help I’m Alive"and "Gold Guns Girls" everywhere, and at first I hated them, but something changed over time.  As bands like Paramore, Sleigh Bells and Wild Flag began to crop up the last few years my heart softened a bit and I realized that I had pigeonholed Metric.  This wasn’t the right move, and I wish I'd checked them out much sooner, but at least I can scoop up their back catalog for cheap.  To say the least, Avid Reader, they

The Bird

by Louise August 24th, 2012 | Artist Review
I had been dragged to concerts long before I had learned to read. Starting in third grade, I had been, shall we say, "strongly encouraged" to play piano. Then, starting in fifth grade, I started saxophone lessons through school. All those years I heard my father's music blasting on the speakers while my mother yelled at him to turn it down. All those elementary school years, and I hadn't found a love for music. That is, of course, until I came across The Bird.

It was my saxophone teacher who truly introduced me to Bird. I was bored with the
