Album Review: Flight of the Conchords, I Told You I Was Freaky, 9/20/09

Flight of the ConchordsDo you have hurt feelings?  Do you think that fashion is dangerous?  Have you ever ridden on a boat with two cannibals?  Are you all about saving dogs with epilepsy?  If you answered yes to maybe a few of those questions, this album is for you.

Fresh off the heels of their second season on HBO, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement are back with their second album of songs from their hit show.  You actually can call this a soundtrack since the songs are taken from each episode, and you really need to see the shows to understand the context of what is happening.  The comedian-duo from New Zealand play a folk group living in New York who write songs about their everyday life.

If you enjoyed Beck’s Midnight Vultures, chances are you’ll like I Told You I Was Freaky.  There is a solid mix of dance songs, a few folk tunes, quasi-raps, and other random hilarity that makes this album a whole.  It is a wonder that these guys can keep a straight face while performing.

Songs like “Hurt Feelings”, “Sugalumps” and “We’re Both in Love with a Sexy Lady” will get people grooving.  However, the best song on the album is “Carol Brown”, which Jemaine sings as an ode to girlfriends past and present.

Every song on this album is funny in its own right, but this album doesn’t have the same zing that the first album had.  That could be because the guys played those songs on the road a bit before recording them, and these new songs sound a bit rushed. Still you can find the fun in each one.  I just hope they signed on for a third season, otherwise, why else did I buy an HBO package?
