Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, John Paul Jones. And that does it for this week’s review.
No, I’m teasing, but if those names don’t get you motivated to pick up this record, then I don’t know what is wrong with you. Starting out as a jam session, Homme providing guitar and vocals, Grohl handling drums and Jones playing bass and other keyboards, the guys tried this out at a few festivals over the summer. The collaboration dates back to 2005 and came into fruition over the past year.
With Homme on vocals you might think Queens of the Stone Age, don’t, this is something fresh and just rocks. Grohl provides a perfect rhythm while Jones does whatever he does. Produced by Alan Moulder, with some extra vocals recorded by Alain Johannes, this is one album not to be missed.
Stand out tracks include: “Mind Eraser, No Chaser”, “No One Loves Me & Neither Do I”, Scumbag Blues”, “Spinning Daffodils” and “Elephants”. This whole album is interesting, and if you are a fan of progressive rock you’ll probably enjoy this. There are solid guitar hooks in there and a great rhythm section backing the whole project. These are the kind of albums to enjoy: when the guys in the band have fun working together you know the results will be great. A few songs do seem long, but overall this record does not disappoint.
If you had the chance to see these guys over Columbus Day weekend in Boston, I don’t want to hear about it- I should have gone. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they will come around again so I can see them. To be honest, whether this album was great or not, I bought it because of the personnel involved. I have faith in my heroes.
