Now, normally I am more into music done by artists like the XX, who are featured in a recent article, but this soundtrack caught my ear.
My dad brought the British film Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging home a few weeks ago because he thought that my sisters and I would enjoy it. From the director of Bend it like Beckham and Bride and Prejudice, this movie is based on the international best-selling series of books by Louise Rennison. It is a coming of age story that involves a lot of drama and fun. I personally thought what made it were the British accents and settings.
This brings me to my purpose in writing this article. The soundtrack to Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging is absolutely phenomenal. As I wrote before, I am not usually one for pop, but I have a special place in my heart for British music! This album is almost completely composed of addicting, happy British songs. I fell in love with the soundtrack of the movie while I was watching it. Actually, I distinctly remember watching the movie and thinking that it was the soundtrack that was holding my attention.
It features a UK band signed to Columbia Records– The Stiff Dylans. A funny story about this band is that the name combines the punk pedigree of Stiff Records with Bob Dylan. The band was original and fictional in Rennison’s book, but when filming for the movie, Tom and James met Matt and Charlie and they were the “fictional” band in the movie. When they realized that they actually had something going on, they decided to form a band in real life.
I do not know what it is about the tracks on the soundtrack, but they are so incredibly catchy. I absolutely love the instrumentals and the singing. There are, typically, a great bass and guitar part, and then the British singing comes through. If you get a chance, check out “She’s So Lovely” by Scouting for Girls, “Girls and Boys in Love” by The Rumble Strips, and “In the Morning” by The Coral.
