As I explained last week, Avid Reader, I came to discover Kings of Leon in a very roundabout sort of way. Three brothers and their cousin decide to form a band playing guitar based blues rock, growing out their beards and sticking to their Southern roots, borrowing a name their grandfather and father had in common. The brothers would follow their preacher father around the south for most of their childhood in the 80’s and 90’s, then by the end of the 90’s would settle in Nashville to start playing music. When their guitar playing cousin joined the band a name was decided upon and in 1999 the Kings of Leon were born.

I can remember around 2000 there were rumors swirling around that Maynard James Keenan had left Tool to form a new band and Tool had broken up. At the time I was pretty upset, Avid Reader, since I was looking forward to a new album and A Perfect Circle wasn’t what I wanted. The rumor mill stopped and it turned out that Maynard needed another outlet for his material that wasn’t a Tool album, so a side project seemed like the answer.
