Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness: The Very Definition of Timeless

While doing research for last week's column, I spied #487 on the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and it got me to thinking... It's been a long time since The Smashing Pumpkins' masterpiece Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness tore up the airwaves, and I've been chomping at the bit to give it another good listen. Mellon Collie, which was released in 1995, is a concept album based around the ideas of the cycle of life and death. The 28-track, two-disc album runs the gamut from the morose, to the angry, to the enchanting

Sin 4 Sin Rocks Baltimore’s Cradle

I had the opportunity to see (and drink with) one of the coolest emerging bands in Baltimore recently. Sin 4 Sin is an 80's style hard rock group based out of Baltimore, Maryland and they rock pretty damn hard. Reminiscent of superband Skid Row, Sin 4 Sin combines hard-hitting guitar and raunchy vocals with an 80's rock flair to bring audiences something they haven't had for some time now. Their EP, Seven Deadly will be released this June. Meanwhile, fans can sink their teeth into the tracks offered on their Facebook and Myspace pages. Incidentally, one track

Slayer’s debut album, Show No Mercy came out when I was only one year old. Slayer had recorded their

Trashy, Ghetto Venues Make Rockin’ a Whole Lot Better

February 18th, 2011 by Jason Lightner | Music Opinions, Rock
Hard rock is supposed to have blemishes. It's supposed to be raw and it's supposed to be real. If you want to see real rock or metal, you need to start checking out your local bands' performances at your nearest hole-in-the-wall venue. If you live in a town that has any type of rock culture, you're going to have an easy time finding these places. They're the kinds of places that, looking from the outside, you would think a great crowd for them would be fifty or sixty. On a Saturday night. With free parking. With no cover and

The Catch is That Pennies Are Useless

Back in the year of 2005, a guy I know started a project to release an album. He wanted to experiment with different musical styles and see what he could come up with. Pennies Are Useless by Catch is the first and final result of that experiment.

A twelve-track album, Pennies Are Useless boasts rock stylings reminiscent of Cake and Beck, hip-hop flows drawing from greats like MC Frontalot and MC Chris and contains more vibraslap than you can count (unless you've got a lot of free time). The album starts off with Rockstar Cola
