Gig Review: Live, Meadowbrook Farms, 6/19/09
For a few hours Friday night it felt like 1994 all over again. This was a night of firsts: first time going to Meadowbrook Farms, first time seeing Live in concert and my first time seeing Candlebox in concert. A friend of mine could not attend the show, and rather than choke on the tickets, he passed them off to me instead, and it was a good time.
Candlebox, known for their biggest hit, “Far Behind”, opened the evening with a solid hour set of 90s rock. Throwing in tracks from their latest release, 2008’s Into The Sun, they mixed in some classic songs like: “Change”, “Arrow”, “Simple Lesson”, and of course, “Far Behind”. With the lack of “10,000 Horses” this was still a great set by a great band.
Live took the stage to thunderous applause and rocked a solid set of songs spanning all seven of their albums. Leaning heavily on Throwing Copper (eight songs) Live proved that despite their age these boys still can have a good time. Songs like “The Dolphin’s Cry”, “Lakini’s Juice”, “Turn My Head”, “Heaven”, “I Alone”, and “Selling the Drama” were received well by the faithful crowd singing along. With an encore including “Sophia”, “Waitress”, “Lightning Crashes”, and “White Discussion” this was a great show.
This is my first show in my “Summer of 90s”; show two is Stone Temple Pilots in July. There is something about seeing these bands after their heyday that shows they still have staying power even though they are not as popular anymore. It feels like high school revisited, and I’ve been given a shot to see all the bands I wanted to see back in the day but never got a chance to.
