Concert Review

In college you grow an affinity for certain bands. While I worked at WKNH in Keene I had the planesideopportunity to work with a few, and Planeside was one of them. Planeside, a rock trio hailing from New York, played several gigs for us and recently stopped in Portsmouth to promote their latest EP, Under The Circumstances, It’s Not Such a Bad Idea.

The Muddy River Smokehouse has a roomy downstairs with a bar, dance floor, and stage begging for live music. Thankfully, last Thursday we were all treated to some great live action. First opener was Regina, a solo singer/songwriter from Worcester playing her acoustic guitar and setting the mood. Mixing in covers from Tom Petty and Jewel to a set of mostly original songs, this was a good way to start the night.

Next we had the pleasure of hearing The Sea Captains. If you took Cake’s smarts and Weezer’s pop genius and threw it in a blender, you’d have this band. A five piece playing original tunes and working the crowd with a bit of pop flair, these boys knew how to set the tone for a show.

When Planeside came to the stage to much applause I felt like I had been transported back to my days in Keene; I even had cheap Pabst Blue Ribbon to remind me. Playing songs mostly off their new EP, we also heard classics like: “Aunt Polly’s Dream”, “Post Cards”, “Lunatic” and “Redhanded” which will be featured on an upcoming episode of Dog the Bounty Hunter.

After a great set, we had a chance to talk with the band and reminisce about shows in Keene and see what was on their horizon. More gigs and possibly a few shots down in Austin, Texas, during some festivals, not bad.
