His Name is Jonah
When I was five, my favorite artist was Twisted Sister. My parents bought me a kids’ drum set because they figured it would be a good way to keep me entertained and out of trouble (they also did it to piss off the neighbors they were feuding with, but I digress). I wasn’t very good at the drums; to this day I can’t play them to save my life. I just don’t have rhythm like that. That’s why I flipped the eff out when I saw five-year-old Jonah Rocks.
Jonah Rocks is a better drummer than many whom I know personally–I’m talking people who have been doing it for over a decade. A YouTube sensation, this kid has never taken a professional lesson and has been teaching himself now for two years. I was amazed to find that this kid has covered some of my all-time favorite artists and has done so completely naturally. From Korn to System of a Down, from AC/DC to Kiss, the list goes on. The best part about it is watching him jam out and seeing that he’s having an absolute blast doing it.
You can clearly see the technique the kid employs as he does all of the songs by ear. He misses some notes sometimes and goes off beat every now and then, but bear in mind: This kid is five years old. He’s not even old enough to understand the meaning of the many songs he’s playing yet, which makes this all the better. When he grows up to be an even more amazing drummer (which he will), he’ll surely look back on these songs in a different way than he does right now.
Apart from the YouTube page, Jonah Rocks also has an official website, but you’ll probably want to stick to the YouTube page for your viewing pleasure. The website is a bit of an eyesore and there isn’t much extra on it that the YouTube page doesn’t have. However, if you want to pick up a pretty swanky t-shirt, the website has you covered.
Watching Jonah Rocks beat those drums makes me want to pick up some sticks and go to town, but I won’t. I’ll just live vicariously through this little guy and avoid making a fool out of myself.
On a side note, how awesome would it be if Jonah Rocks were to cover The Prodigy?
