California 37

by Louise September 5th, 2012 | Album Review
When a band's been around since 1994, you have to wonder what kind of work they put out for their sixth studio album. How different will they sound? Of course, when the "they" hasn't even stayed the same over the years (and in fact, hasn't even kept the same number let alone the same members), there's no reason to expect the same sound. Indeed, I had heard "Drive By" on the radio several times and did not recognize Pat Monahan's voice or the sound of the band until the radio host gave it away. Intrigued more by the idea

Hybrid Theory 8 Track Demo

by Jason Lightner September 4th, 2012 | Album Review
Seeing as I'm on a bit of a roll with Linkin Park at the moment, I figured I'd talk about a rare demo I came across a few weeks ago on LPLive.net.

If you're really into Linkin Park, you might be aware that the group began with six members; friends Mike Shinoda, Rob Bourdon, and Brad Delson, along with recruits Joe Hahn, Dave Farrell, and Mark Wakefield. This progenitor to Linkin Park was called Xero, and through limited means, they put out a short demo tape. I have yet to find this one, so if you know a

Jepsen’s EP, Curiosity

by Louise August 28th, 2012 | Album Review
After the massive success of Carly Rae Jepsen's hit single "Call Me Maybe," I can't have been the only one left wondering, what does her other music sound like? It's not that I even like "Call Me Maybe"; I just had to know, does she even have other music to offer? Sure enough, Jepsen has a few other tracks out there for us to listen to, the most recent coming from her EP Curiosity, which was released in Canada on Valentine's Day this year.

Curiosity was originally going to be a full-length album, but was transformed into an EP shortly before

Metric, Synthetica, 2012

by J Frazzetta August 27th, 2012 | Album Review, Music Opinions, New Music
It took me a while to appreciate the nuances of Metric.  Since 2009’s release of Fantasies I heard "Help I’m Alive"and "Gold Guns Girls" everywhere, and at first I hated them, but something changed over time.  As bands like Paramore, Sleigh Bells and Wild Flag began to crop up the last few years my heart softened a bit and I realized that I had pigeonholed Metric.  This wasn’t the right move, and I wish I'd checked them out much sooner, but at least I can scoop up their back catalog for cheap.  To say the least, Avid Reader, they

Baroness, Yellow & Green, 2012

by J Frazzetta August 22nd, 2012 | Album Review, Music Opinions, New Music
From time to time I get email updates from various music sources talking about bands I’ve never heard of and albums to keep an eye out for in the coming weeks.  If a link is available to preview a track or at least gain some knowledge about the group I will follow a lead and see where it takes me; thus bringing me to this week’s review of Baroness.  I will say the name threw me for a minute, Avid Reader, as I was expecting some kind of opera based music --  and then when I realized they were
