Little Broken Hearts

May 2nd, 2012 by Louise | Album Review
I often come across little bits of information that blatantly remind me of how small a fraction of knowledge I have about the music industry and some of its leading artist. Last week, I learned in class, of all places, that Norah Jones is one of Ravi Shankar's daughters. I know this is probably old news to the majority of readers, but it blew my mind. (Do I at least get some credit for knowing who Ravi Shankar is?)

Anyway, I've always loved Norah Jones, and decided to return to a bit of her music, and just in time: Jones'

Acoustic on VHS

All right there, Avid Reader, this week we have two quick reviews coming at you since I’ve been listening to two quick EP’s for the past week.  An EP, Extended Play, is often a sampling of material before a proper album is released by a band and can be used as a space filler until something else comes along.  If a band feels like taking a regular single to the max they can make an EP with some choice album cuts, a b-side or two, maybe some covers, and then press a limited amount so it becomes a collector’s

Esperanza Spalding, Radio Music Society, 2012

April 17th, 2012 by J Frazzetta | Album Review, Music Opinions
You might recall the young Miss Spalding as the winner of the "Best New Artist Grammy" a while back.  The girl with the crazy afro who took down Justin Bieber; which should come as no surprise since she has an enormous amount of talent.  Did I mention that she is a double jazz bassist and vocalist?  No small feat for someone her age --  when most kids were listening to pop radio she was out exploring, and thank goodness she came back to tell us about it.

One of the biggest differences on this outing is the guests she

Ani Difranco, Which Side Are You On?, 2012

April 13th, 2012 by J Frazzetta | Album Review, Music Opinions
Some albums are made with a certain message in mind and some albums have a specific agenda hiding underneath; which is all well and good.  However, if you are familiar with any of the output of Ani Difranco, she keeps her agendas and messages right up front for you to absorb.  By no means am I a devoted follower or casual fan -- to be honest, this album was included with some other promotional albums I picked a few weeks back -- but I am familiar with her work and the impact she has made since the 90’s up

Heartless Bastards, Arrow, 2012

March 30th, 2012 by J Frazzetta | Album Review, Music Opinions
Opening track "Marathon" could have been pulled right out of any Band of Horses album, but there’s a catch; when Erika Wennerstrom starts to sing you pay close attention.  There is something in her voice that brings to mind the blues of Janis Joplin, a little more grit than Grace Potter and the lonesome feel of Patsy Cline.  This is just the first track, Avid Reader.  To be honest with you all, I picked this one up based on the name of the band, as I was anticipating a bunch of dudes singing blues rock or something.  Instead I
