Compaq Big Band @Nashua Winter Holiday Stroll

by Louise December 11th, 2012 | Concert Review
The 19th annual Winter Holiday Stroll was held as usual on the Saturday following Thanksgiving in Nashua, New Hampshire this year. Main Street was shut down to traffic from 5 PM to 10 PM and around 30,000 holiday strollers, young and old, took to the streets, enjoying free live entertainment from the musicians who dared to brave the weather outside, as well as snacks from the vendors that lined the streets. Ducking indoors for a bit of warmth, strollers found boutiques and restaurants that were open late, as well as special venues that featured more live music.

Ash, Great Scott, 11/21/12

by J Frazzetta November 26th, 2012 | Concert Review
Tim Wheeler is a short fellow in person whereas Mark Hamilton towers over everyone and Rick McMurray seems to be of average height.  How do I know this for a fact?  While we were waiting around for their show to start last week, we happened to see them walking around selling merchandise and shaking hands.  The three of them were very cordial and happy at the reception they were getting on the day before Thanksgiving.  When it comes to holes-in-the-wall Great Scott in Allston might one of the finest, Avid Reader, yet seven years later here we were, not

Don Byron @MIT Kresge Auditorium, 10/27/12

by Louise October 30th, 2012 | Concert Review
On Saturday night, clarinet virtuoso Don Byron kicked off his return to MIT with a compelling and innovative gospel concert held in the Kresge Auditorium. With the concert being free to students and not more than 400 yards from my residence, I had no excuse not to attend.

The concert had two major halves. The first seven numbers featured solely Don Byron and his New Gospel Quintet. Before attending the concert, what I knew about Don Byron is that he was a jazz clarinetist/saxophonist and musical mastermind. I also knew that the concert was characterized as a “gospel” concert, which

Smashing Pumpkins, Agganis Arena, 10/27/12

by J Frazzetta October 29th, 2012 | Concert Review
Back in 2008 or so the game Guitar Hero: World Tour was tearing up households across the country.  Around that time I read an interview with Billy Corgan asking how he felt about being an unlockable character in the game and if he intended to play the game; he replied: when you’re already a guitar hero there’s no need to play a game.  After last Saturday night, I can say that he wasn’t pulling any strings with that statement.  You might recall, Avid Reader, that I spent this past July discussing the Pumpkins and their new album, so

Aardvark Jazz Orchestra @Scullers Jazz Cafe

by Louise October 16th, 2012 | Concert Review
On October 3, I attended the Aardvark Jazz Orchestra concert held at Scullers Jazz Club. I arrived around 7:40 PM and was surprised to find that the venue not yet even close to full. Nevertheless, I found it difficult to get to a table due to all of the chairs scattered about; they were prepared to fill the room to maximum capacity.

Eventually, the room did fill up. The average age of the audience was probably around 35. That mean is fairly skewed by the number of students in attendance affiliated with MIT Music (myself included). Had it not been
