Sometimes, when looking for videos on Youtube, I came across videos that have had their soundtracks replaced due to copyright laws and other technicalities. Sometimes, the music videos are labeled with a special name: VEVO. Have you ever seen this and wondered what it was?
VEVO is a partnership between the Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and the Abu Dhabi Media Company. Artists working within any of these music companies have their music videos exclusively featured on VEVO. There is no better ‘get rich quick’ scheme in the music business than soundtracks. I can understand why people buy soundtracks for musicals; that makes sense to me. However, shelling out money for a movie or TV soundtrack is obscene, which is why I do it rather infrequently.
I hate to admit it, because I’ll lose my street cred, but I did buy the soundtracks for True Blood and Eclipse. I had no plans on endorsing either until I read up that Beck and several other interesting artists were contributing original material. And there is the ploy: original.

Graduation Mix

For a few years I worked as an aide at a high school. Graduation was a tough time for some students and joyous for others. I would make mix CDs for some students to help them get through and prepare for the next step. Steering clear of Third Eye Blind, or Vitamin C, I found tunes that had some real meaning and could speak to the students. Here is 2010’s mix:

Music with an agenda is not always a good thing. Protests songs are one thing, but if you really have something to say then you should try running for office. However, if you have artists coming together to help spread awareness about AIDS, that is a different story. In the latest edition of the Red Hot series of compilations, members of The National teamed up with organizer John Carlin to compile two discs of unique music by contemporary Indie artists.
