Gipsy Kings
August 26th, 2010 Posted by Bea
I cannot believe that I have not written about the Gipsy Kings yet! If I had to pick a favorite musical group, I think that my all-time favorite would be them. I do not know what it is about their sound; I could just listen to them all day and on repeat. Their music is the only music that I can listen to while I am studying and they are the ones who I put on when I just need something to distract me from my thoughts.
The Gipsy Kings are a Spanish-language group from Arles and Montpellier, France. I...
Classic Review: Big Star, #1 Record/Radio City, 1972 & 1973
May 4th, 2010 Posted by J Frazzetta
On March 17th the world lost a true legend. Alex Chilton had not been a mainstream success for a long time, but many in the alternative rock arena viewed him as a giant. With The Box Tops he gained notoriety with the song ‘The Letter’. A few years later he joined a group of friends in Big Star and managed to create two rock gems. He is best remembered as a songwriter, and you can see why R.E.M., The Replacements, Teenage Fanclub, and The Shins owe him so much. Before there was ‘power-pop’ there was Big Star. I came...
Gig Review: The Sea Captains, Milly’s Tavern, 3/20/10

When it comes to live music, it is pretty hard to keep me away. Especially if it is at a bar, pretty cheap and you know the lead singer. Mixing in originals with some interesting covers, The Sea Captains put on a solid performance.
There is a lack of good guitar pop and smart lyrics in the world, which is where the Captains seem to fit. They’ve been playing shows between Manchester and Portland, Maine, since 2005 and have built a steady following. The lyrical wit of Cake, early Weezer and a penchant to get up a groove is what...
Album Review: Shearwater, The Golden Archipelago, 2/23/10
March 2nd, 2010 Posted by J Frazzetta
This is a departure from what I’ve been reviewing as of late. No, it isn’t grindcore or anything drastic. The songs are drenched in harmonies and world beat. Rather a strong record from a band I wish I heard about earlier than last week. This is Shearwater’s sixth album, and I have a feeling I’ll be back racking a lot of their catalogue.
The band is a collaboration of members from Okkervil River and Kingfisher. As the cover suggests, this album is about living on an island and struggling with limited surroundings, and an abundance of Nordic themes. This is...
Album Review: Animal Collective, Merriweather Post Pavilion
January 4th, 2010 Posted by J Frazzetta
I know, I know, it is 2010, however, I do have a few leftover albums from last year I didn’t review. Case in point we have Animal Collective. This album was released in January of last year, and I picked it up two weeks ago. I’ve been on the fence about Animal Collective for over a year, and this album seemed like the best way to dive in. I’m glad I brought my swim trunks.
Four guys from Delaware that probably listened to the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds and Smiley Smile three times a day, Animal Collective can be seen...
